CAS Winter Sports Success

During Term 2, St James’ finally got to take to the big stage of Interschool after-school sport as we took on our first official season of the CAS Competition.

It takes many years to build a culture where students are eager and committed to representing their school in sports. It is a real community effort, and St James’ is grateful for the work that has been done previously that has enabled such success this year.

Thank you to the staff who volunteered their time to coach a team and congratulations to the students who stepped up to this exciting opportunity. This winter season engaged over 170 students from Years 7 – 12 with our Year 10 – 12 Girls AFL team set to play their fixtures in Term 3.

A recent study from the University of South Australia into student wellbeing highlighted that wellbeing improves when students participate in extra-curricular activities such as sport. If you managed to see our students in action over Term 2 then this research is no surprise. It has been wonderful watching the students develop new friendships as they face the cold early morning training sessions, and celebrate success and overcome losses together. It has taught students agency, commitment, and the value of having teammates to support you.

We had four teams make it to the CAS Winter Sports semi-finals which is a notable achievement for our first season. Congratulations to the following teams:

  • Year 8 Girls Netball
  • Year 7B Girls Netball
  • Year 8/9 Girls Soccer
  • Year 8/9 Boys Soccer

A special congratulations to our Year 8/9 Boys Soccer team who won their Grand Final with a 4 -1 victory over Irene McCormack Catholic College. The boys were down 0 – 1 at half-time but produced a gutsy performance in a passionate second half.
