Duke of Edinburgh Award | Zero2Hero

Four of our students recently participated in Camp Hero, an event organised by Zero2Hero. A couple of them shared the following reflections on their experience.

Keeley:

Camp Hero, run by Zero2Hero, is a powerful five-day leadership and mental health camp held at Nanga Bush Camp. I had the privilege of attending and it was a life-changing experience. On Day 1, we were placed into mentor groups and encouraged to connect with new people. We met Anita and Peter, who shared their moving story of losing their son to suicide, opening the door for deep and honest conversations. That night, we reflected on personal life-changing moments within our groups.

Day 2 was about self-awareness—we discovered our personality types through the E-Colours system and worked together in a low ropes course. That evening, we laughed and bonded over team games during activities night. On Day 3, we were woken at 6am with banging pots and pans for an icy lake swim (yes, I went in my PJs!). We learned about the teenage brain, nutrition, and ended the day with a dance party and a powerful “Unmasking” session, letting go of the parts of ourselves we hide.

Day 4 included suicide prevention training and outdoor adventures like abseiling and rafting. On Day 5, we celebrated with a graduation, and I proudly gave a thank-you speech to the kitchen crew. I left inspired, connected, and forever changed.

Katie:

Attending the Zero2Hero camp for my Gold Residential Project was an unforgettable experience that pushed me outside my comfort zone and helped me grow in so many ways. From challenging activities like high ropes and raft building to late night chats in my dorm and team bonding activities, I made lifelong friendships and memories that I’ll always treasure. The camp also gave me a deeper understanding of mental health and the challenges people face around it. I feel incredibly lucky to have been educated by such passionate and knowledgeable mentors and presenters, and I came away with new skills, greater empathy, and a strong sense of purpose. Camp Hero was such a great experience filled with unforgettable memories.
