Service & Giving
Service learning
At St James’ Anglican School, our students are encouraged to realise that learning is more than just classroom lessons. Our objective is to cultivate our school values and a sense of respect and responsibility towards our community in our students. The Service Learning program aims to combine classroom learning with community service and understanding the importance of giving back.
Teaching our Orange Army to be responsible, caring citizens is an important focus. We encourage our students to put others needs before their own and to strive to make a positive difference within the world.
Each year level is asked to identify a project, either around the School or the local suburb, that addresses a community need. They then work together to help make a difference. To ensure learning is meaningful and students remain passionate, we encourage them to share projects they are interested in. Providing students with agency and autonomy of projects within the community generates enthusiasm and engagement.
Learn more about how our students contribute to the needs of the local community on our Community Engagement page.
Service
We demonstrate service by:
- all pitching in to make tasks possible
- recognising and celebrating the positive achievements of our community
- maintaining strong relationships with students, parents, colleagues and the community
- making a positive difference to St James’ Anglican School and the community everyday.
Our youngest students in Kindy are ‘waste warriors’ aiming to keep their play area free from rubbish, whilst our eldest students in Year 6 engage with a clean-up Alkimos initiative.
In other year groups students help to regenerate bushland, harvest freshly grown produce, recycle and reuse items around the School and also to serve others by getting out play equipment and then packing it away.
Fundraising and Giving
At St James’ we fundraise for local charities and organisations to give back to our local community. We help others by participating in fundraising activities and events as well as collecting for donation drives. This includes organising bake sales, gold coin donations for different causes and more.
Learning the importance of giving teaches students to help others who may be less fortunate. Giving and fundraising promote a culture of compassion, sharing and generosity.
