During the recent Cambodia Tour, 31 of our Year 9 to 11 students had the rewarding opportunity to engage in service learning at the Treak Community Centre.
Over two days, the students, along with staff members Miss White, Mrs Syme, Mrs Gastevich, Mr Lovett, and parents Ms Hubbard and Mrs Smith, dedicated their time to making nearly 400 bricks from recycled plastic and cement, which will be used to build two toilet blocks for the village’s school community.
In addition to construction work, our students assisted in the classroom, participating in a variety of English language activities, completing colouring projects, building 3D models, and even helping with cooking.
The interaction extended beyond structured activities, with students engaging in recreational play during break times. Volleyball, skipping, frisbee, and ball games were among the favourites, creating meaningful and impactful connections with the Treak Centre’s students who are aged 5 to 15.
A particularly special moment was when Mr Lovett donated shirts from his local football club, Joondalup City FC, to the village school, enhancing the students’ enjoyment of sports.
Throughout the two days, the St James’ students interacted with approximately 400 local students, forming friendships and leaving a positive impact on the community. This incredible experience not only allowed our students to participate in service learning beyond the gates of St James’, but allowed them to contribute meaningfully to the local Cambodian community and enrich their understanding of service, teamwork, and global citizenship.
What an unforgettable journey for all involved, and on behalf of our community we express our pride at the extraordinary impact our students, teachers and parents have made on Cambodian communities.
