As NAIDOC Week falls during the school holidays this year, we have been acknowledging it throughout the week by embracing meaningful cultural experiences across all year levels.
Year 3 students enjoyed an educational walk in Alkimos, learning about the land and its stories. Our ELC students took part in a session by Yalkarang Consulting, using symbols on pebbles to tell stories and learning the song “Kaya Koorda,” which translates to “Hello Friends.”
Many students attended an incursion with Sean Choolbura, a talented Indigenous performer and cultural ambassador. Through storytelling, dance, and music, Sean shared his rich heritage, inspiring students to deepen their understanding and appreciation of Indigenous history and culture. Staff also came together for a morning tea to acknowledge NAIDOC Week.
The ELC students were further inspired by a powerful presentation from Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse, who celebrated Indigenous culture through music and storytelling. Year 6 students enjoyed a traditional Hangi lunch, experiencing a unique part of Indigenous heritage, while Year 10 students explored Māori traditions, including elements of the Haka.
The Junior School gathered around the fire pit to make damper, connecting with traditional practices in a hands-on and meaningful way.
These moments have enriched our understanding and appreciation of Indigenous culture throughout the school community.
